I’ve been on a juice kick lately. All of the juices, all of the time. Some days it’s a orange, carrot, ginger & turmeric combo. Other days I’m chucking loads of greens from the fridge into the juicer and making it up as I go. But the one juice I’m still working to make a regular part of my routine: celery juice. It seems like a lot of people in my social media feed have been hyping up the vegetable enhancing wonder. From helping to heal thyroid issues to dealing with acid reflux, there’s been quite a bit of chat about the benefits of celery juice. So today I’m digging a little deeper into celery juice, the benefits of it and why you should consider incorporating it into your diet.
WHAT IS IT?
This one is quite straight forward: a bundle of celery juiced. Typically, one bundle of celery makes about 16oz of juice. You can either run it through the juicer or use a high-speed blender with a bit of water.
WHEN DO YOU DRINK IT?
Ideally, you drink celery juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. You want to give your body the best chance to process the juice and absorb its benefits. The recommended amount to drink is 16oz but if needed you can start with 8oz and build from there.
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
It’s actually rather plain with a slight after taste. I’d recommend drinking it as fresh as possible because after a day or two it doesn’t quite taste as good. You could add a squeeze of lemon or cucumber juice to it if needed. But the most beneficial way to drink celery juice is on its own.
WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT CELERY JUICE?
I’ll admit that I’m not a fan of celery plain. I’ve always joked that it’s a useless vegetable. But after hearing so much about it and doing a bit of research, I’ve been persuaded. Celery contains mineral salts that can help destroy nasty pathogens in the body. According to Medical Medium, it contains quite a few undiscovered mineral salts that act as antiseptics in the body. These antiseptics attach to viruses and bacteria in the body slowly killing an eventually destroying them. (1) This could potential help aid your body healing illnesses like shingles or strep.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
There are quite a few but the one I think has the biggest impacting is calming inflammation. Whether you’re dealing with arthritis, lyme disease or auto immune diseases, finding relief from inflammation can be key. My initial discovery of celery juice was in pursuit of something to assist my thyroid*. It also promotes better digestion and can help lower blood pressure. (2) It’s also been known to help with acne prone skin.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE A DIFFERENCE?
I don’t think you’ll find a set answer for this one because it’s honestly going to be different for each person. More than anything, it’s about consistency. I’d suggest trying it for a week at first to see how your body reacts. However, I’ve read countless stories about people who’ve been drinking celery juice for years and sing it’s praises. Also, if it takes you time to build up to just celery juice, don’t worry. I like to add lemon and cucumber to mine.
WHAT IF I DON’T OWN A JUICER?
You can make it with a blender! You’ll need to blend it with water and strain well. I’d suggest using a nut milk bag* for finer straining. But feel free to experiment with what you have available.
