Never did I ever think I’d be a grapefruit margarita girl. Not because I didn’t think I’d like them. More so because the extent of my bartending expertise has always been pour wine from bottle into glass and TADA! Magic, right? But after seeing Lauryn from TSC talk about margaritas on stories enough times, I got curious. And of course, sharing is caring.
Now I am by no means an expert on quality liquor. I have a little knowledge and I lean into it. Or I phone a friend. But it wasn’t until the last few years that I learned that some tequila has added sugar. Yes, this is me getting my bedazzled sugar soapbox out. She’s cute and colorful and we’re here for the long haul friends. So how do we avoid buying tequila that’s been sugared up for our grapefruit margaritas? Stick with the 100% Agave.
If it doesn’t say it, then you can bet it’s been filled with the added stuff. And if you’re wondering what’s wrong with sugar, think of it like a drug. Our bodies become addicted to sugar. We have it and we want more. We spike our blood sugar and it suddenly needs another hit to stay up and another hit. Creates a viscous cycle that makes us feel like poop.
Now you could absolutely make my Grapefruit Margarita recipe on the rocks. I, however, love a good ice-y drink (see my Strawberry Froze recipe) so I’ve decided to blitz everything in my trusty Vitamix. Also, if like me you are a still an “in-training” bartender and lack the tools to properly measure ounces, here’s a Savvy tip: 1 oz = 2 tbsp.

If and when I can gather with my gorgeous friends again, I’ll happily serve this drink. I tend to opt for the less sweeter side of drinks so you could always do a version with a bit more honey for your sugar loving friends!

Skinny Grapefruit Margarita
Five ingredients. No added sugars. You'll be obsessed!
- 1 cup ice
- 1/3 cup grapefruit juice
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 oz triple sec
- 1.5 oz tequila*
- salt** if you like a salted rim
Add all of the ingredients, minus the salt, to a blender.
Blitz on medium for 20 seconds or until it resembles and icee.
Transfer to a cup and enjoy!
*I love Casamigos. No added sugar. And it's made from agave.
**I'm a basic drink gal so I don't often salt the rim of my margarita. But if you're a salt girl, don't forget to salt the rim first!
