How To Style An Oversized Blazer On A Pear Shaped Body

Categories Style

There’s nothing quite like an oversized hot pink blazer to bring an outfit alive. And as your resident curvy Barbie, you know I can teach you how to style something that might seem bold and intimidating.

The first thing to know is that you are the moment. The blazer is simply here to help you enhance it. Since pink is a neutral color for me, I tend to assume that pink goes with everything. Let that be your guide if you tend to overthink things.

Styling a midsize body can feel unnerving if you’re someone who has spent their life thinking they need to lose weight, feel uncomfortable being seen, or don’t want to seem attention-seeking. Women with extra assets naturally attract eyes because there’s more to admire.

Don’t let your fears about someone else’s thoughts dictate or steal your joy when it comes to dressing.

And even if that all sounds like a bit more than you’re ready for, by the end of today’s post, you’ll know exactly how to style an oversized blazer on a pear shaped body. Your outfits will be that much more iconic.

Structured Vs Unstructured Blazer Styling:

I’ve spoken in previous content about drawing the eye visually. When we look at someone, we tend to look centrally and then look towards the widest part of their body. Unless there is cleavage, and then everyone gets distracted.

There are two types of shoulder structuring for blazers that you’ll want to consider when styling or buying. I have an entire post on unstructured blazers here that you can read.

For today’s midsize outfit styling, I’ll be using a hot pink blazer that has structured shoulders. I.e. padding. There are varying levels of this (some are very defined and bold, others that lean into structure more casually). Learning how to style an oversized blazer on a pear shaped body can make these choices much easier.

If you want a blazer that you’ll be able to style more consistently, opt for a lighter shoulder padding so it gives more jacket energy and less statement moment.

Savvy note:

The blazer I’m wearing in today’s post is considered a granddad blazer. This blazer is the most similar in style. Size up to get the same effect.

Everyday Casual – Oversized Blazer With Wide Flared Leg Jeans

How It Came Together

My method for styling tends to start with one piece or one need, and everything goes from there. In the case of this outfit, I was feeling particularly limited in my clothing options. I think I had one pair of denim that actually fit me at the time. I was at the beginning of learning the rules for styling a pear-shaped body. And quite frankly, I needed something that was comfortable and chic.

Why It Works

Whenever you put flared denim on a pear-shaped body, you want to be mindful of how the shoulders are balanced with the bottom width. Because it was hella hot, I opted for a cropped top. But I needed something to balance the shoulders so that my waist didn’t look so square.

Putting the blazer over the shoulders gives me the extra I need at the top to prevent everything from looking bottom-heavy. Learning how to style an oversized blazer on a pear shaped body helps create that perfect balance. By wearing it as an over-the-shoulder vs actually wearing it, you get the depth behind which makes the waist look more defined.

Where I’d Wear It

I wore this for a coffee shop outing. But this would be perfect for a casual brunch or dinner. This outfit gives daytime, shopping, no fuss throw on energy. If you need to be out the door in 5 minutes, don’t want to worry about something that might need to be steamed, and need an outfit that will make you look snatched but doesn’t require shapewear, this is it.

What You Can Do Differently

A crop top isn’t going to be everyone’s perfect thing. I would swap this top for a silk tank or even one of my favorite Amazon tees for the same casual (but more covered-up) energy.

Ps. I always wear flares with a pair of shoes that have a pointed toe. I don’t want to look like my feet are lost underneath.

Winter Chic – Oversized Blazer, A Colorful Sweater & Leather Pants

How It Came Together

There aren’t many opportunities in Florida to wear leather pants. But I do try to enjoy the days when I can. This outfit really came down to feeling like the colors were intentional and balanced. I adore these heel mules, and they add a bit more glam.

However, the bag on the bed tells me that I was looking for something with more room. Adding more black automatically means I need to accessorize to balance the colors in the sweater. Thus, I needed something pink to keep this cold-weather midsize outfit feeling more cohesive.

Why It Works

I want my outfits to have a voice. Much like the styling of a character on TV, there’s a consistency when it comes to my style. And while colorful is certainly one of the defining adjectives, so is balance, especially when learning how to style an oversized blazer.

Adding a pink blazer to a colorful sweater, but wearing black pants and accessories, says that this is true to me. I didn’t just put on this sweater today with whatever pants I had. I thought about the full look.

The layers of colors tell a story. I’m not just wearing clothes. I’m communicating with them. That’s style.

Added bonus of it toning down what can feel very eye-grabbing: leather pants. They are shiny. They are fitted. And despite the color of this blazer being so vibrant but not too shiny, it does bring them down to a more casual daytime level.

Where I’d Wear It

This outfit is lightly elevated but still casual for me. So drinks with the girls, a movie night or any evening event I want to be casually chic.

What You Can Do Differently

Pick a solid color sweater and swap the shoes for something in matching tones. Switch the leather pants for Spanx leather leggings or these that are lined. If you opt for a flat shoe, I’d suggest wearing a shorter blazer, depending on where it hits on your legs. I’m 5’4″ and normally in 3-4 inch heels.

We can do a whole blog post on how to find the right blazer length for your body if that’s helpful. Let me know in the comments below.

How It Came Together

We are certainly due for a blog post on how to get more outfits out of your wardrobe, and layering tops with pieces that feel basic is an easy way to do it without spending money. It’s worth noting that if you do this that you’ll need to leave time for adjustments, as the dress took some finessing to play well with this knitted top. Learning how to style an oversized blazer can also make layering feel more intentional and polished.

It also helps that the blazer can make things more forgiving if the fabric is bunching and needs to be hidden.

Why It Works

This outfit doesn’t need the pink blazer, but it certainly works with it. Now, in this case, it was practical. I think I was battling a slip under this white dress, and things kept wanting to ride up. So the blazer made sure there was always modesty.

But the other thing is that this corset top (specifically this one) can make my center look a bit too square. Knowing how to style an oversized blazer adds depth and extra shoulder width help keep a more balanced ratio between my hips, waist, and shoulders visually.

Where I’d Wear It

You could certainly qualify this as business casual. Just maybe with a slightly longer dress. Otherwise, it’s perfect for date night, lunch with the girls, a day of shopping, or any time you just want to feel colorfully chic and tailored.

What You Can Do Differently

Corset tops can be challenging when you layer them on top of something that isn’t as fitted. I’d opt for something adjustable vs something that zips with only one fit. I am wearing a corset dress underneath. You can buy them where they don’t have strings, but the center fit is already tailored to give you a more defined waist. See this blog post for the dress without added layers.

This would be perfect layered with a sweater, tights, and ballet flats as well. As a petite gal, you’d need to be conscious of boot height (on the leg, not the heel) because it would make your legs look shorter and be less flattering. More on that here though.

Concert Barbie: Oversized Blazer, Bodysuit, Leather Pants & Pink Platform Heels

How It Came Together

I can tell you there’s as much practicality as there is fun with this midsize concert outfit. Specifically with the shoe choice. A chunk heel is surprisingly more comfortable than you’d think. But it also means you’re not catching your heels in cracks, wooden slats, or anything odd during a night out.

Again, Florida girl, so the blazer gives some warmth but isn’t going to overheat me. This one is bold, but if you’re still finding your confidence when choosing pieces that are more fitted, wearing this on a night out when it’s darker is the perfect time to test it.

Why It Works

Again, you say everything when you choose your accessories. They are what take an outfit from “oh I have these two pieces, and I can put them together” to “I have a vision & a voice, and I’m using it”.

The shoes and pink blazer alone cover you in balancing things, but help with practicality. Knowing how to style an oversized blazer also gives you flexibility. So if you needed another bag, say something clear for a concert or over the shoulder for a bar crawl, you’d be golden. I would also say this is a perfect outfit to actually wear the blazer (instead of draping it).

But the photo works better with the bag on top of the pants.

Where I’d Wear It

This is 1000% a nighttime look for me. Trendy new restaurant that’s darker and cozy when I’m in Atlanta. Girls’ night out dancing or going to a concert. When I’m in the mood to get a killer outfit pick or just feeling particularly edgy.

I don’t wear combos like this very often, but I think it’s important to know that you can still build an outfit that is amazing even if it feels a little out of your comfort zone. It’s good to push yourself with style occasionally.

What You Can Do Differently

Swap this bodysuit for a Honeylove one and add this sheer mesh top from Amazon. Your boobs will have better support, and you also have the added bonus of shapewear snatching your waist for the evening.

The shoes can go any kind of way depending on your activities for the evening. Just remember, your handbag should balance the tone of the shoes with the blazer. So if your shoe is more casual, don’t go too casual on the bag. Something shiny fits better with the evening energy.

Savvy wearing a Blazer, Balconette Corset Top, High Slit Skirt & Pink Heels

Confident & Celebratory: Oversize Blazer, Balconette Corset Top, High Slit Skirt & Pink Heels

How It Came Together

Heaven help the girl whose birthday outfit doesn’t work when she’s already running late on the day. This photo is probably one of my favorites we took this year, but this outfit – she came together in about 5 minutes.

Now, if you don’t often think too long about what you’re wearing, this might seem trivial. Keep in mind that on a good day, it takes me 15 minutes minimum to get all the details right. But there was one major determining factor for this look: the hair.

The curls I spent extra time doing turned out to be trash by the time I finished my makeup. Thus, the hair went up (something you never really see from me). And I needed a quick, non-fussy outfit that also worked with my hair pulled back and not up.

I think we probably need a post on that, too.

Why It Works

The oversized blazer takes this outfit from being very showy to something cohesive with a touch of look at me. It tones things down in a way that lets me add some elegance with the satin shoes and my sparkly pink handbag.

Often, this blazer is used to help carve out my waist as the backdrop. But the dip in the skirt did that for me. Bonus points that with this top and skirt combo, nothing needs to be steamed. A balconette top is perfect for my body type and breast shape.

So the combo of everything really let me crave things out, but let me add modesty if I wanted to fully wear it, button it up, or just have less skin showing.

Where I’d Wear It

I wore this for my 35th birthday. This is a dinner in a mood restaurant vibe, or wherever you simply want to feel hot. Whenever I question if I should wear an outfit, I think about the 90-year-old me who is going to look back and be so happy I did.

You’re not too much for wanting to look good for you.

What You Can Do Differently

In this instance, I would have packed different shoes and swapped to the heels once I got to my destination. This dinner was a bit of a hot mess that you can read more about here. The waist of this skirt means I normally only wear this with something cropped.

But you could throw on tights, boots, and a cropped sweater with your pink blazer for a bit of a winter option. I’d previously done a version of that here.
