The Life Travel Essentials

Categories Life

We all travel. In some way, shape or form, we travel. It may not be a grand adventure going to the grocery store or work. But if it involves getting out of my pajamas, it’s travel.

I used to be that girl with the giant mary poppins bag that kept me prepared for life. Let’s be honest. I’m still mostly that girl. I like to be a problem solver. And no one likes to be out without a band-aid or ibuprofen when needed. So today, I want to share my life travel essentials.

This is essentially my mini bag of things to keep on hand that you don’t ever think about but are grateful to have when you need it. A heads up, this list may seem a bit long but it’s split between what I carry on me and my car stash. Also, a side note before we get started – if you want to see my latest travel adventures, be sure to check out the video below. 🙂 Let’s begin!

Tissues – I’ve had the most persistent cold for the last few weeks. The box of tissues in my car has been my life saver. Seriously. I don’t know how I’d function without it. You could do the packets in your bag. Either way, they are needed.

Ibuprofen – There’s just something about being in pain that is hard to shake. I’m not a big medicine fan but I always have a bit of this on hand. Whether I’m dealing with cramps or a headache, I know it will get the job done.

Hand Sanitizer – I’ll be honest and say this one doesn’t stay in my bag. However, it’s in my car bag so it counts. I prefer to really wash my hands but you really never know when you’ll need it. Plus, no one wants dirty hands.

Lotion* – I never used to be a lotion person. My first year in Atlanta changed that for me. I know the winters aren’t really that harsh but for someone from a humid background the winter was too dry. I typically stock the L’Occitane Shea Butter because it’s not greasy but it’s super moisturizing. I’d highly recommend it.

Mini-Toothbrushes* – A friend of mine always carries these around on set and it inspired me to get my own. Now, I keep them in my car. They are like a toothbrush & floss all in one. I find I use these the most when I’m traveling. But they are just a great thing to keep around.

A bottle of water* – You can ask my mother. I’m notorious for buying a case of water and forgetting to bring it in the house. Instead, I pull from it when I travel instead of buying water. But I’m also trying to cut down on the amount of plastic I use and toxins so I typically keep a refillable bottle in the car. It’s great for the gym. Or if you’re out and about finding a place to fill it up. Whole Foods has a refill section. Free water is always in the budget!

Extra bobby-pins – I wish I could say I kept these in my purse but honestly they normally stay in the pocket of my car door. Because my hair is short right now, I don’t tend to pull it back often. But I like keeping these on hand for those pesky days when that one piece of hair won’t work with me.

Extra hair tie – I’m definitely the girl that can keep a hair band for a while. Bobby-pins? No idea where they go. Hair ties? I’ll use the same for months. But on a recent trip mine got lost in the bottom of my bag only to be found on the last day. Now, I’m just paranoid enough to keep an extra one on hand just in case.

Gum – This could also be mints but a breath saver is ideal. No one wants smelly breath and no one wants to smell it.

Nut Butter Packet – I tend to underestimate when I’ll be hungry constantly. My solution is to keep nut butter packs in my car and purse. They have a good amount of protein and it keeps me from eating things I really don’t need.

Headphones* – You’d probably be amazed and shocked by the amount of headphones I keep in my bag at any given time. I have a pair I use when I’m playing keys but I also keep my wireless ones for the gym. Not to mention the back up pair in my car. For me, a lot of it’s based on work or working out. If I’m traveling and need to get work done, I’ll always pull up spotify and turn on the instrumental piano. It’s actually what I’m currently enjoying. But I’ve also wanted to go for a run in another city and realized I didn’t have headphones. I just don’t do workouts without music. Now, I make sure I have them constantly.

A pen – A basic life necessity. I’d say sharpie as well. They both come in handy all the time.

Phone Charger* – If you’re a iphone person, you’ll know why. But when I say charger, I mean the cord, the block and a back up battery. Hopefully the battery is charged. Typically, I forget that part. Whoops.

Chapstick – My first winter on set, I think I constantly went to the medic for chapstick. I would lose them. Or I’d forget it in my other pants pockets. Now, I try to keep a good one on me at all times. There is just something about chapped lips that is unbearable.

Tampons – No girl wants to be in the position to get her period and not be prepared. Let’s be real. Periods aren’t fun. Making sure you have back ups in case your cycle takes on a mind of it’s own is the best peace of mind.

Band-Aids – Again, a basic essential because you just never know when you’ll need it.

Extra pair of shoes – Living in Florida, I wear some form of sandal about 80% of the time. So I like to keep an extra pair in the car to change into in case I’m out in heels or tennis shoes and just need to swap out. This may look different for every one but it’s a good thing to have in the car.

Multi-tool – One year for Christmas, my mom got us all these multi-tools with forks and spoons on them. At the time, I thought what in the world is this? Now, I love that flipping tool. It’s been used so much it’s falling apart. But I also have my set one that has a knife and bottle open on it. You just never know.

Umbrella – I don’t really carry this on my person but you’ll always find it in my car. Florida loves to rain randomly. It’s charming like that.

Whew. I know that was a long list. And to be honest, I’m sure I skipped a few things. For example, I keep a pillow and blanket in the car along with an extra jacket. And you may find that you need other stuff as well. If you’re a gym rat, there’s probably a spare pair of clothes in the car. Or you might have a bag full of make-up. Everyone’s list is a little different.

But I hope that my list can help you be a little more prepared. If anything, it’s the small things that get us through the day. And this list is the stuff I’ve always thought man I wish I had that!

What all do you keep on you? Is your car filled with treasures to keep you prepared? Leave me a comment below and let me know.

Until next time
